WEDNESDAY, December 19 - Embassy Suites to Dearborn - 9:00 AM Start

Due to the extended forecast for low temps and a chance of precipitation on Thursday I am changing the ride this week to a WEDNESDAY ride.

This week we shall ride to breakfast at Cook's Corner in Dearborn.  We will leave Embassy Suites at 9:00 AM and travel mostly on Interurban.  This is the flattest ride I lead.  Over the approximate 40 mile round trip there is less that 800 ft of elevation gain.  The route map can be found here.

Perhaps we can even swing by and pick up a Power Ball ticket.

THURSDAY, December 13th : Embassy Suites to Smithville : 9:00 AM Start

I plan to ride to Smithville this week for breakfast (perhaps an early lunch instead) at Lowman's.  The outbound route is about 24 miles.  Starting at 9 we may have trouble making it there before the breakfast cut-off.  The return trip is around 12 miles.  I am still having trouble mapping on Google maps so I have included links to maps I have made using the Garmin utility.

I hope you can make it.

THURSDAY, December 6th:Embassy Suites to Riverside : 9:00 AM Start

My initial message is below.  Google Maps has been crashing so I have no map for this ride to Riverside.  It is about 18 miles to breakfast and probably shorter returning.  Sorry for no map.  It might be time for a computer tune-up (or even a new tower).
The ride begins at 9:00 AM from Embassy Suites.

_______________________________________________________________

I originally planned to ride to Smithville but I just noted that the predicted winds have increased and changed direction to be out of the south.  As I write this I am substitute teaching so I am unable to post a map right now.  I will do this soon.  I plan to head west from Embassy Suites out Tiffany Sp. Rd. to Childress to Barry to K then south to FF, thru Parkville to Riverside (using Horizon Drive to get off of 9) for breakfast at the Corner Cafe in Riverside.  The return will be determined en route depending on the conditions.  One option is Vivion east to AA to the north.  We might instead go toward Briarcliff and north on roads just east (and parallel to) N. Oak.

I hope to see you there.

PS - If you are interested in Cycle Zydeco you might click on the banner at the top of the right column below.  April 4-7 is their date.  My group will probably leave April 2 and return to KC April 8.  Let me know if you might want to join us.

THURSDAY, November 29th - Embassy to Happy Gillis - 9:00 AM start

I thought this week we would ride from Embassy Suites (9 AM start) to breakfast at Happy Gillis crossing the HOA bridge.  The entire route is mapped here.  The weather will be warm enough.  Wind from the SSW will give us a tail wind for the return trip.

NO RIDE SCHEDULED ON THANKSGIVING

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and I hope to see you all next week.

THURSDAY, November 15th - Embassy Suites to Edgerton: 9:00 AM

Let's ride to Edgerton this week.  The mileage is similar to the Dearborn trip (~20 up and 20 back) but the terrain is considerably hillier.  This is a beautiful route - rural almost the entire way.  Don't let the hills scare you.  Here is the route link. I'm changing the start time this week to 9:00 AM to allow for a little extra warmth .  Weather.com is calling 44 degrees at 9 AM warming to 55 by 1 PM and winds around 8 mph outof the SW (headwind return).

Here is the Garmin map from our July ride to Edgerton.

Thursday - Nov. 8th - no ride

In spite of a great forecast I will be unable to lead a ride this week due to another obligation.  Next week, then.

THURSDAY, November 1st - Embassy Suites to Dearborn - 8:00 AM start

This is perhaps my most popular route, approximately 40 miles round-trip and pretty flat and pretty.  The forecast is for great weather.  Mari Ruck used to lead a ride called "SKIP WORK AND PLAY."  That may be called for this Thursday. (Breakfast at Cook's Corner)
I hope to see you Thursday.

You may have noticed the link at the top right calling for donations to name the Heart of America bicycle/pedestrian bridge in the memory of Bob Watts.  I call your attention to this for your consideration.  More info is found via links provided.  I did know Bob, though not well, but I am familiar with his considerable contributions to KC biking.

The next two paragraphs are repeats from previous posts.
Also you may notice a new gadget at the top of the right column.  You can subscribe to receive emails automatically whenever I create a new post on this site.  It appears to be easy to unsubscribe if you later decide not to receive updates.  For now I plan to continue sending emails myself (redundant if you subscribe) when I post a new ride but I may eventually quit that so that only subscribers will get email notifications that a new ride is "up."  If you have this site bookmarked you can always visit the site without prompting to see the latest posting.

If you wish to be removed from my email distribution list for this ride please reply to that effect and I will remove you from the list.

See you Thursday.

NO RIDE on Thursday, October 25th

I will be unable to lead a ride this Thursday.  Those of you have signed up for automatic notifications of new posts will probably not have received this before the ride BUT I will have sent out my own notifications to you if you are on my distribution lists.

See you next time.

PS - The 2nd Thursday of November (the 8th) will also be a conflict for me (as well as Wednesday, Nov 7th).  If anyone would like to lead in my stead you can contact me by email and I can prepare info for the blog site.

THURSDAY, October 18th, Embassy to Dearborn (depending on wind) - 8:00 AM start

I have been hesitant to post a ride for this week due to a forecast of strong winds.  Though winds are still forecast to be in the mid to upper teens out of the west I think we could try the usual route to Dearborn.  If conditions dictate we could select a different destination at the start.  Let's be brave and give it a try.

See you there.

We will follow this route; breakfast at Cook's Corner.

Monday, October 8, 2012

WEDNESDAY, October 10th, Embassy to Woodsweather II (Antioch and Vivion) 8:00 AM start

I had this destination a few weeks ago but the threat of rain kept us away.  I thought I'd give it another chance.  The route map can be found here.  The mileage is roughly 16.3 out and 17.3 back.  There is a little experimentation along the way using a relatively new trail and crossing a bridge over 169 that is not open to car traffic.  As you see I have included the breakfast menu below.  Click menu to make it large enough to read maybe.  I notice coffee is $2.25.  I am not sure how the food compares to the original Woodswe(a?)ther but I thought we could give this a try.  What do you think?

THURSDAY, October 4, 2012 - Embassy to Smithville - 8:00 AM start

The latest forecast shows a high likelihood that this ride will stay dry.  Weather.com says temps will be right around 60 for the entire time with clouds increasing after noon.  I thought we would ride this trip to Smithville with breakfast at Lowman's.  I hope to see you there.

A little advance warning: I have accepted a subbing job for the following Thursday, Oct. 11th so I will lead the ride that week on Wednesday.

Another alert: I understand a 2013 calendar is in planning stages and will feature a ride each month along with dates for local (and beyond) cycling events.  The Thursday Morning Northland Bike Ride may be posing for a calendar shoot in the near future (probably requiring a slightly earlier gathering for a picture before the ride - dressed in your most colorful biking attire).  Stay tuned.

THURSDAY, Sept. 27 - I can't lead this week

I will be asking in an email if anyone would like to take over this week.  I have conflicts on Wednesday and Thursday so will miss riding with you.  I should be back next week.

I will update this page if someone volunteers to lead (in an email response to a blast I will send).

You might consider signing up for automatic email notifications that I have posted a new ride.  There is a box where you enter your email address at the top of the column to the right (just under the graphic).  I will eventually be dropping my own email announcements and let this Blogspot feature do this for me.

See you next week.  Happy Riding!

THURSDAY, Sept 20, Embassy Suites to Dearborn - 8:00 AM start

It's about time for another trip up interurban to Dearborn for breakfast at Cook's Corner.  We will follow this route (with the possibility of minor alterations).  This is approximately 40 miles round-trip and pretty flat and pretty.

THURSDAY, September 13th, Embassy Suites to Woodsweather II - 8:00 AM start

The weather forcast has been improving so I thought I'd post a ride even though the chances of rain are still significant.  The plan is to ride to the new Woodsweather II cafe near the old Antioch shopping center on the corner of Antioch and Vivion Roads.  The Google map of the route is here.  I have mapped 17 + miles out and 13+ miles back.

OPTION 2

If the chance of rain is still high Thursday morning but conditions are dry enough to try I may switch to a figure 8 route that keeps us closer to the start.  Breakfast would be after one loop at the Cracker Barrel immediately across I-29 from Embassy Suites.  A second loop could be ridden if the rain still holds off.  The map for this option is here.

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

THURSDAY, September 6th - Embassy Suites to Edgerton, MO - 8:00 AM start

Let's ride to Edgerton this week.  The mileage is similar to the Dearborn trip (~20 up and 20 back) but the terrain is considerably hillier.  This is a beautiful route - rural almost the entire way.  Don't let the hills scare you.  Here is the route link. We will leave Embassy Suites at 8 AM.  Weather.com is calling for single digit easterly winds.

Here is the Garmin map from our July ride to Edgerton.

THURSDAY, August 30th: Embassy Suites to NKC - 8:00 AM

I will lead a ride on Thursday morning leaving Embassy Suites at 8:00 with a breakfast destination to be determined.  I will update this later today when I decide.  I hope to see you there.

OK - How about North Kansas City (the NKC Cafe across Armour from 1st Watch - the TWA place).  Here is the route we will use.

WEDNESDAY, August 22nd - Embassy Suites to Platte City 8:00 AM

Due to my acceptance of a substitute teaching assignment on our usual Thursday I will lead this week's ride on WEDNESDAY (same time; same place).  We will leave Embassy Suites at 8:00 AM for breakfast at either the Country Cookin' Cafe or Suzie's in Platte City depending on the size of our group. Here is the route.  I hope to see you there.

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

THURSDAY, August 16th: Embassy Suites to Dearborn - 8:00 AM start

This week we shall ride to breakfast at Cook's Corner in Dearborn.  We will leave Embassy Suites at 8:00 AM and travel mostly on Interurban.  This is the flattest ride I lead.  Over the approximate 40 mile round trip there is less that 800 ft of elevation gain.  Since my knee has been acting up I could use a gentle terrain this week.  I hope you can join us.

The route map can be found here

POST RIDE: 15 riders up, 14 back (one voted off).

THURSDAY, August 9 - Embassy Suites to Happy Gillis : 8:00 AM

THURSDAY, August 2nd - Embassy Suites to Happy Gillis - 8 AM

I thought this week we would ride from Embassy Suites (8 AM start) to breakfast at Happy Gillis crossing the HOA bridge.  The entire route is mapped here.  I had an enjoyable though hot RAGBRAI last week.  I will include a link to my Picasa page of pictures with the RAGBRAI banner near the bottom of the left column below (on full web version).  Sorry for being a little slow posting this.  I hope you can make it anyway.

THURSDAY, July 19th - Embassy Suites to Edgerton, MO - 8:00 AM start

I have just discovered that Harmer's (in Edgerton) has re-opened as of July 1st.  I have missed the ride up Highway B so I plan to make this our destination this week.  The mileage is similar to the Dearborn trip (~20 up and 20 back) but the terrain is considerably hillier.  Here is the route link. We will leave Embassy Suites at 8 AM.  I hope to finish the return before the heat of the day - weather.com is calling for single digit headwinds for the return which should aid in keeping us from baking.  Be brave.

THURSDAY, July 12th: Embassy Suites to Dearborn - 8:00 AM start

A little cooler temperatures this week.  I plan to lead the ride to Dearborn again this week.  This is roughly a 40 miler; 20 to breakfast at Cook's Corner and 20 back.  This is the flattest route I lead.  Most of the miles are on Interurban which has the grade of the trolley run that it once was.

There is the possibility of optional mileage on the return if time and weather allow.  If some opt for the longer return others can easily follow the direct return since there are few turns retracing the outbound route back to the start.

Please note the start time is
8:00 AM

THURSDAY, July 5th: Embassy Suites to Liberty - 8:00 AM start

Last week we altered the route riding to Platte City instead of the planned ride to Liberty.  This week I thought we would try a modified Liberty route.  Please note that the start time has been moved up 1/2 hour to 8:00 AM.  The Google map version can be found here.

I hope you can make it.

Sunday, June 24, 2012

THURSDAY, June 28 - Embassy Suites to Liberty - 8:30 start.

This week I will lead the ride to Liberty's Corner Cafe as we did about a month ago.  This is about 17 miles each way with several hills.  The map of the route can be found here.
     Hope to see you there.

Again I have another Knuckleheads plug.  Last year I went to see a long time favorite Texas swing band - Asleep at the Wheel.  They are back again on Friday, July 6th.  We (Kathy and I) have our tickets already. Join us there if you wish.  Here's a clip:

THURSDAY - June 21st : Embassy Suites to Dearborn 8:30 AM

This week we will ride the relative flat trip to Dearborn with breakfast at Cook's Corner.  This ride is an up and back ride of nearly 40 miles.  The google map for this ride can be found here.  I hope to see you there.

Garmin Connect - Dearborn from Embassy 6 21 12

FYI:
Kathy and I just got our tickets to see Dale Watson at Knuckleheads the evening of this ride (Thursday, June 20st at 8PM).  Feel free to join us if you want.  Here's a Dale Watson sample:

THURSDAY, June 14th : Embassy Suites to Smithville - 8:30 AM

This week we will ride to Smithville; breakfast at Lowman's.  The route map is here.  I have chosen a short 15 mile route out with a 28+ mile return. The return route, though a little hilly, is one of the most scenic we ride.

You might make note of the next two upcoming rides (linking banners below-right).
This Saturday is a 66 mile ride from Platte City (Suzie's Cafe - 9 AM start) presented by Kansas City Ultra-Cycling with the intention of introducing riders to the Brevet Series and to long distance cycling.
This Sunday is the City of Fountains Bicycle Tour.  KCMBC link to this ride is here.

THURSDAY, June 7th: Embassy Suites to Platte City - 8:30 AM

This Thursday I am leading another ride to Platte City following this route.  We will leave at 8:30 and have breakfast at the Country Cookin' Cafe.
I plan to follow the blue line out (21+ miles) and return via the red (18- miles) for a total of nearly 40 miles. Come join the fun.  The forecast is for sun shine with a daytime high in the mid to upper 80s.

I plan to have the Dearborn ride either next week or the week after.  Though approximately the same mileage as this week's ride, the terrain is more moderate.  The Dearborn route seems to be a favorite for many who ride with me on Thursday mornings.

THURSDAY, May 31st - Embassy Suites figure 8 route - 8:30 AM start

With significant morning rain probabilities I will plan my figure 8 route which stays pretty close to the start location.

I may make slight modifications to this and I'm thinking of riding the red segment first this time.

If the weather clears in the evening you may want to consider (see link below-right):

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

THURSDAY, May 24th: Embassy Suites to Liberty - 8:30 AM start

This week I will lead a ride to the Liberty Corner Cafe.  This is about 17 miles each way with several hills.  We will travel a segment of a relative new trail from Agnes to Happy Rock Park and along a new stretch of NE Soccer Drive on the way there.  There are several hills but some nice scenery along the way.  The map of the route can be found here.
I will be adding links to more upcoming rides at the lower right (full web version only - this is omitted from the mobile version).  I had a blast on the Tour de Brew last Sunday.  Congratulations to all involved and thanks for such an enjoyable event.  We (Jack and Coke planners) are jealous of your great weather karma.
     Hope to see you there.

I just checked the weather and strong south winds could result in an altered route.  I would head South to have a tail-wind to finish if necessary.

Monday, May 14, 2012

WEDNESDAY, May 16th: Embassy Suites to Platte City - 8:30 AM

I am scheduled to substitute teach again next Thursday so -  Wednesday, May 16th we will ride to Platte City leaving Embassy Suites at 8:30 AM for breakfast at the Country Cookin' Cafe. The last forecast I saw had a morning low in the mid 60s with a high for the day in the low to mid 80s.

The route I have in planned stays away from HH so it's not as hilly as some Platte City runs. We still plan to climb up 4th Street after breakfast to get out of Platte City.  I have to check road construction to make sure we can run this return route without modification.
See you there.

Thanks to everyone who rode the JACK & COKE ride last weekend.  We had some 250 riders.  This was our best weather yet in spite of some pretty significant mid-day showers around Faucett.
Also we want to thank the many volunteers and sponsors who made this 3rd annual event a success.  We plan to be back again next year for Jack & Coke IV (probably May 11th).
See the banners at the bottom right of this page for upcoming rides.

THURSDAY, May 10th: Embassy Suites to Smithville - 8:30 AM Start

This Thursday we ride to Smithville for breakfast at Lowman's leaving Embassy Suites at 8:30 am.  I have mapped a 17 mile outbound route with a 25 mile return.  There could be optional shorter return routes.
The map for the ride is here.

THURSDAY, May 3rd: Embassy Suites to Riverside, 8:30 AM

With a decent wind from the Southwest I thought I would lead a ride heading South to Riverside, breakfast at the Corner Cafe.  The map I am using for illustration is approximate and subject to slight change.  Here is the  route map for this ride.  We will start from Embassy Suites at 8:30 AM.
I have just returned from out Bike Zydeco trip to the Cajun country in and around Lafayette, LA.  27 of us had a wonderful time eating crawfish etouffee, sampling the local brews, dancing to zydeco music and riding our bikes approximately 150 miles through the flat terrain of Louisiana.  We are not sure if the Cycle Zydeco people will pick this up next year but if not, pay attention to our announcements.  We are planning to do this again whether with Cycle Zydeco or by ourselves as we did this year.  Try this site for my video of Jeff explaining Bike Zydeco to the Channel 3.

Thursday, April 26th: I will not be able to lead a ride this week.

I hope to see you next week.  Don't forget to sign up for up-coming rides.  Look to the lower right of this page.

THURSDAY, April 19th Embassy Suites Figure 8. START AT 8:30 start

I plan to lead a ride leaving Embassy Suites at 8:30 AM.  Due to chances of rain I have selected the figure 8 ride (Google map here) which keeps us nearer the start with a breakfast stop at the Cracker Barrel just across I-29 from Embassy Suites.  The first loop, approximately 18.5 milees, is the blue route above cycled essentially counterclockwise.  You can see that we travel most of the perimeter of Weatherby Lake.  After breakfast we can cycle the red route, again counterclockwise) for another 15+ miles.

WEDNESDAY, April 11th - Embassy Suites to Dearborn (try #3) - 9:00 AM

OK - Here's the dillio.  The past 2 weeks I have scheduled a ride to Dearborn but "the best laid schemes of mice and men..."  Two weeks ago we went to NKC instead because of wind.  Last week we went to Platte City due to a threat of rain (which never materialized).  This week we try again.

Dearborn (breakfast at Cook's Corner) here we come.  We will start at 9:00 AM this week and please note:

WEDNESDAY

not Thursday due another commitment (not subbing this time).  I'm not sure what to make of this but as of Sunday evening weather.com promises better weather on Wendesday vis-a-vis Thursday anyway.

The Google Map for the ride to Dearborn is here. The ride will leave Embassy Suites (near the KCI airport) at 9:00 AM. This trip is about 20 miles to breakfast at Cook's Corner and 20 miles returning.

I hope you can make it.

WEDNESDAY, April 4: Embassy Suites to Dearborn at 9:00 am

AMELIA EARHART CENTURY
Gary McGregor has asked me to announce that registration is open for this beautiful ride in Atchison, KS on June 24th.  There is a link at the bottom right of this blog along with links to some other upcoming organized rides.

THE WEEKLY NORTHLAND RIDE
I'm going to try Dearborn (breakfast at Cook's Corner) again this week.  Last week we changed the route and traveled to NKC because of wind direction.  We will start at 9:00 AM this week and please note:

WEDNESDAY

not Thursday due my commitment to sub on Thursday.

The Google Map for the ride to Dearborn is here. The ride will leave Embassy Suites (near the KCI airport) at 9:00 AM. This trip is about 20 miles to breakfast at Cook's Corner and 20 miles returning. The forecast is iffy but at last check there may be a window on Wednesday morning for our ride.

I hope you can make it.

POST RIDE
With the threat of rain we altered the route to stay closer to the start:
What we rode instead

THURSDAY, MARCH 29th: Embassy Suites to Dearborn 9:00 AM start

By request I plan to lead a ride to Dearborn this week.  Also by request we will start at 9:00 AM this week.
The Google Map for the ride to Dearborn is here. The ride will leave Embassy Suites (near the KCI airport) at 9:00 AM. This trip is about 20 miles to breakfast at Cook's Corner and 20 miles returning. The forecast is great and this is the most popular ride I lead - a pretty flat run up Interurban, a paved road now but once a trolley line to St. Joseph.  If you haven't ridden the Northland in a while this would be a good one.

I hope you can make it.

NEXT WEEK
Looking ahead and with permission from Thor and Wodin, I will move Thursday to Wednesday (I'm subbing Thursday).  I am assured that this will not put an irreparable tear in the space-time continuum.  We will ride on Wednesday, April 4th.  I plan to move the start time to 8:30 AM  (smaller so you don't confuse with this week) and keep it there for a while.

ORGANIZED RIDES
Please consider registration for the Jack and Coke ride or any of the upcoming other organized rides.  See links at the bottom-right of this site.

THURSDAY, MARCH 15 : Embassy Suites to Smithville (Try this again) : 9:00 AM start

I will lead a ride leaving Embassy Suites at 9:00 AM (still) for Smithville, breakfast at Lowman's.  The route can be found here.  It is about 18.5 miles out but only 13.5 back.
Weather.com show the 9:00 AM temps in the mid 60s and a high Thursday near 78.
I Hope to see you there.

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

THURSDAY, MARCH 8 : No Ride

Sorry but I will be unable to lead a ride this week.  I hope to see you all next week.  Please note that the Jack and Coke Bike Ride (May 12th) is now taking registrations.  Early registrants receive a T-shirt and a pint glass.

Monday, February 27, 2012

THURSDAY, MARCH 1: Embassy Suites to Smithville (or maybe NKC): 9:00 AM start

I will lead a ride leaving Embassy Suites at 9:00 AM (still) for Smithville, breakfast at Lowman's.  The route can be found here.  It is about 18.5 miles out but only 13.5 back.
Weather.com show the 9:00 AM temps in the mid 40s and a high Thursday near 70.  We could alter the route or even the destination if the wind speed becomes problematic.
I Hope to see you there.

UPDATE

The wind is forecast to increase to mid teens out of the south by even 11 AM so we might want to consider going South toward NKC (something like this) instead of Smithville.

Monday, February 20, 2012

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23rd: Embassy Suites to Platte City or maybe Dearborn? : 9:00 AM

RETHINKING : HARMER'S IS CLOSED!!!
We will probably head to Platte City or Dearborn instead.  The wind is to pick up out of the NW so this should give us a push up the hill on 4th street from Platte City or all the way back from Dearborn after breakfast.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

THURSDAY, FEB 16TH : Embassy Suites to Riverside : 9:00 AM

I plan to lead a ride to Riverside with breakfast at the Corner Cafe leaving Embassy Suites at 9:00 AM.  The late notice is due to a late cancellation of a substitute teaching job.  It's almost like a snow day except I expect I'll be able to get a few miles in. The map can be found here.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

THURSDAY, FEB 9 - A little too cold.

It looks like it might be a little cold for my blood this Thursday - mid 20s at 9 AM (though warming to mid 40s in the mid afternoon - I may get out then).  I'll update and send out an email if the forecast changes or if I decide to brave the cold for the morning ride.
I got a pretty good Tuesday ride in today from Prairie Village to NKC with Doug Polson.  Breakfast at El Monde.

FUNNY FOR THE WEEK

THURSDAY, FEB 2 (GROUNDHOG DAY)- Embassy Suites to Dearborn 9:00 AM

I've been hibernating the last couple weeks.  It's time to ride again.
Hey, it's my week in the Kansas City Cyclists calendar (still available - follow this link for info).  I requested this week because it includes Groundhog Day, my harbinger of the end of winter (what winter?).
I plan to lead a ride on Thursday, February 2nd leaving Embassy Suites at 9:00 am for breakfast at Cook's Corner in Dearborn.  This is a 40 mile round trip, 20 miles up; 20 back (approx) and is pretty flat.  The forecast shows a high near 60 with start temps around 40.
