THURSDAY, Decemver 10 - Embassy Suites to CaddyShack - 9:00 AM Start

CaddyShack (approx. 3rd and Cherry - Southeast end of HOA Bridge) was a hit last time - I thought we'd go again.  Pizza's are their specialty I'd say.  Last time I split a large 3 ways and had more than enough, just sayin'.

Weather is supposed to be great:

Here is the route I have planned - 20 miles out, 20 miles back.
Start from Embassy Suites at 9:00AM

THURSDAY, December 3 - Embassy Suites Ride Around the Area - NO STOP - 10:00 AM Start

Here I am!  When last I looked there was a chance of winter precipitation in the forecast.  Lately that has changes, at least on the APP I use.  I have trouble bringing myself to watch local weather on the news for fear that I might be exposed to collateral political news - ew!

I plan to start at 10 when the temp rises above freezing and head with the wind at first going around Lake Waukomis then by Weatherby Lake before turning North.  The map is below, the route link is here.  There is no lunch stop planned so bring your snack again - and a waterbottle.

BTW - I was so driven to get to 6300 miles to beat my previous high yearly mileage that I am now at 6770 miles and aiming for 7000.  Those miles have all be enjoyable especially those with you all.

FRIDAY, Nov 20, (Not Thurs) Morning Northland Ride - Embassy Suites to Dearborn - 9:00AM Start

I am deciding to change this week's ride to Friday.  Thursday's wind is the main factor for this alteration.  20 mph winds would be a little rough.  The temps are slightly cooler on Friday but still in the 50s.

I thought we would travel to Dearborn so as to have a tailwind on the return.  Possible meal locations in are in the process of changing hours of operation so I decided to avoid that problem all together by doing another ride without a meal stop.  Again bring a snack for an extended stop in Dearborn as we did recently (Oct 1 I think).

This route is roughly a 40 mile round trip.

THURSDAY, Nov 12th - Embassy Suites to Iron District (NKC) - 9:30 AM Start

This week - another trip to NKC where there are several outdoor places for our stop.  I am trying to be a little creative about changing up the routes. CAVEAT - I may get myself lost along the way.  Here is what I am thinking for November 12th. 16 miles there, 17 back for a total of 33 miles.

Link to Route Here

The weather looks tolerable.

THURSDAY, Nov. 5th- Embassy Suites to Velo Garage (Pizza) Start at 9AM

Back by popular demand - we will have a lunch ride to the Velo Garage and Tap House in NKC.  I am trying to vary routes and I plan to ride part of this Wednesday to check it out.  This route is only 17.75 miles there (we may have to meander and stall to get there at or after 11 when they open).  The return is 24.9 miles for 42.65 miles total.

THURSDAY, Oct 29, Northland Bike Ride - Embassy Suites to the North - START AT NOON

Because of early morning rain chances, diminishing North winds and increasing sunshine forecasted I am moving the start time this week to noon.  My current plan is to ride to the North (perhaps across the Fairfax Bridge) at first then return (without a major stop) perhaps using the trail if the wind speeds stay elevated.  If I decide on a particular route I'll update this post.  I may just make the route up as we go.

THURSDAY, Oct 22, Northland Morning Bike Ride- Show & Go 9:00AM Start

I forgot to mention last week that I will be unable to lead a ride this coming Thursday.  I contacted Bob Papreck about guiding a Show & Go ride leaving Embassy Suites on October 22nd, 9AM.  The extended forecast I have seen shows a high temperature in the 80s with some pretty strong winds.

Have a good ride in my absence and I look forward to re-joining the group on the 29th.

THURSDAY, Oct. 15th - Embassy Suites to TBD - 9:00 AM Start

UPDATE - (posted Wednesday 8:00 PM) Let's decide Thursday morning at 9AM.  Several ideas have crossed my mind but I haven't been able to decide so we can decide together.

See you in the morning.

I'm working on a route and a possible stop.  I have a ride this morning (Thursday 10-14) so I will try to update this post this afternoon but count on a 9 AM start from Embassy Suites Thursday.  You might bring a snack in caser we just make an extended pause instead of a meal stop.  I'm considering possible locations, wind and temperature.  If nothing else we can make this a show-and-go this week.

If you're on my email blast list you will get another email if and when I update this site.

THURSDAY, October 8th - Embassy Suites to the Lunch Box (East Bottoms) - 9:00AM Start

Here is the plan for this week.  We will ride to the Lunch Box just across the HOA Bridge.  The might have outdoor seating - there is an outdoor area and I think they will have chairs where we can hold plates on our laps.  This is eventually going to be an outdoor venue but they have not been able to manage that yet - still I think it's worth a try.

The route measures 17.3 miles there and 20.2 miles returning for 37.5 miles total.

THURSDAY, Oct 1st - Embassy Suites to Velo Garage (NKC) - Brisk 9:00 AM start

I've mapped this route to the Velo Garage for lunch.  They are serving pizzas now from 11-2 on Thursdays & Fridays.  The Velo Garage has added an outdoor seating area as well.

20.4 miles there and 16.1 miles back for 36.5 miles total.  The weather looks cool and we have a headwind for our return.  I have mapped using the Line Creek Trail to block some wind.

We start at 9 from Embassy Suites.  I suggest some warm clothing for the trip and lunch.

THURSDAY, Sept 24th - Loop Around KCI from Embassy Suites - 9:00 AM Start

This week I have a 31+ mile loop around KCI.  Map for this route below.  No planned food stop so maybe bring a snack for the road.

THURSDAY, Sept 17 - Embassy Suites to Iron District in NKC - 9:00 AM Start

Let's try again - this time with a stop at the Iron District in NKC (16th and Iron).  I'm showing off a couple new routes (for me).  One route runs the risk of delay for train crossing.

My planned route is 21.5 miles to the Iron District; 14.7 miles back for a total of 36.2 miles.  Some alterations may be made on the fly.

The Iron District has outdoor seating - masks required when up and about.  There is a possibility of getting food, coffee - even a Bloody Mary if you want.  Service has been slow but we can make a stop or not.

THURSDAY, Sept 10 - No Ride this week

Chances of rain look pretty high for Thursday plus I have a very slight wrist malady which could stand another day off.  Perhaps next week.  Happy riding in the mean time.

THURSDAY, Sept 3 - Embassy Suites to Dearborn - 8:30 start - No breakfast stop.

Well - How are you all doing?  I hope everyone is staying safe.

It's been 26 weeks and nearly 3800 miles of mostly solo riding (for me) since I led a ride from Embassy Suites.  I thought I'd give it another try with modifications - start time 8:30 AM, Thursday, Sept. 3.

  • Bring a mask and wear it when appropriate.
  • Observe social distancing at stops and even on the ride.
  • No breakfast stop.
  • No poking fun at my Covid hair style.  The helmet hair version is particularly weird.

I plan to ride a simple route from Embassy Suites toward (or even to) Dearborn.  This is essentially an out-and-back ride so it would be possible to turn around at any point along the way.  It should be easy to retrace your route to Embassy Suites without guidance - there only a few turns on the entire route.  Dearborn and back would be a little under 40 miles.  Turning back at Camden Point would be approximately 30 miles.

Here's the route mapped out only.  The return will be on the same line.  You might want to bring a snack for the trip and plenty of water.

Trail Riding with Kathy and her new eBike

Kathy has a new ebike and has been eager to take it out - away from car and pedestrian traffic.  We did a ride on the Katy Trail about a month ago using a rental ebike - OK but not what she wanted.  We rode the Prairie Spirit trail - Kathy on her old Schwinn (not an ebike).  She was fine there riding 15 miles more or less.  Yesterday we rode nearly 25 miles on the Smithville Lake trails - we rode 8 miles there on Friday for our first run.  This was nice and the weekday attendance was low enough to be enjoyable.  I had a little trouble finding maps marking paved trails so I have created my own map which I share below.

Excelsior Springs Ride Map

I did this ride with 2 others on May 20th.  A few people have asked about the route so I am putting that info here.

I started at the Capitol Federal Sports Complex of Liberty, 2200 Old State Hwy 210, Liberty MO 64068.  Phone 816-439-4390.  They allow parking at the complex office building until 3:30pm M-F.  You might call to confirm that.  No restroom facilities are open there for now.

From parking you go East on Old 210 until it runs in to (New) 210.  Then East up a hill to Stillhouse Rd.  Next - South down to Missouri City; East on Main St. which becomes Old 210 again before hitting (New) 210.  Continue East to N then North to the Elms Hotel and South on KC Ave to the Wabash BBQ - 646 S Kansas City Ave, Ex Springs 816-630-7700.

Ride with GPS map - this has a cue sheet

To return continue South on KC Ave until you reach a "T." Then a right followed by a left on to St Louis Ave (which will become Hwy H).  This will take you to Liberty and the Wm Jewell Campus.  The map shows a turn off of H going by the Jewell football field.  You can do that or stay on H past the campus.  At the first stop light you head East on Mill St (or it may be called Richfield Rd) to Claywoods Pkwy.  Turn South and go 2 miles to Current where you turn right - down a hill and around to Ruth Ewing Rd.  Right on Ruth Ewing then left on Liberty Landing Rd.  This takes you to Old 210 where a left turn takes you back to the start.

I hope you are all getting chances to ride.  I've been out quite a bit, mostly solo.  You can check my routes on Strava.  I hope we will be able to have some sort of a ride together soon but now is too early for me.  Take care.

THURSDAY, April 2 - No Organized Ride

I'm not sure if I will be riding.  If I do ride it may be morning laps at the Downtown Airport again (probably drive there).  I have been getting quite a bit of riding in but mostly solo.

Below is info about social distancing when riding.  Note that units are metric.  Click graphic for the associated article.
FYI- 20kph and 7.5m is equivalent to 12.5mph and 24 feet

THURSDAY, March 26 -Social Distancing Version - Wheeler Airport 10:00AM

I hope you have been able to get some riding miles in spite of the stay-at-home order (see the order document - Section III item 1. iii : Biking is allowed).

Here is my plan for Thursday.  I am riding from home starting at about 8:30AM with the intent of being at the Wheeler Airport (Northeast end parking lot) at 10:00AM.  I will do few laps before heading home.  If you would like to see me there and say, "hello," and social distance together I would love to see you.  I did this ride yesterday (Tuesday).  There were quite a few people on the trail as I returned home.

I'll tie a bandana around this signpost when I get there.  I'll ride clockwise around.  If you need to look for me and I'm not in sight you could ride counter-clockwise to find me.  I will remove the bandana when I leave.

See you but :

I'm canceling the Thursday Ride for 3-12-20 due to wet roads and continued chance of rain

I'm canceling the Thursday Ride for 3-12-20 due to wet roads and continued chance of rain.  See you next week.

THE FORECAST FOR THE THURSDAY RIDE

The Thursday forecast is looking kind of soggy.  The rain percentages keep changing.  I propose meeting at 9:00 if the weather forecast improves and looks promising.  I'll post updates Thursday morning.  The route can be determined at the start.

Wednesday, March 4, 2020

Thursday, March 5th, Morning Northland Ride- Embassy Suites to Platte City - 8:30 Start

The temperatures Thursday are going to be nice but we pay for that with a pretty strong wind out of the Northwest.  I'm suggesting we leave at 8:30 AM to get a jump on the increasing winds of the day.  The route is 16+ miles out and 12+ miles returning.  The return should be sweet.

THURSDAY and SATURDAY (Feb 27 & 29) Northland Bike Rides to The Ship and Kate's Kitchen - 10:00 AM & 9:00 AM Start

THURSDAY, Feb 27 - Embassy Suites to West Bottoms
10:00 AM

This Thursday I plan to ride to The West Bottoms, lunch at The Ship - a cool new place for us.  The route is 19 miles there and a little under 21 miles back - 40 total.  It would be easy ride additional miles at the end.

SATURDAY, Feb 29 - Knuckleheads to Kate's
9:00 AM

Saturday, February 29th (Leap Day) I will lead another ride to Kate's Kitchen from Knuckleheads.  The idea here is to ride to brunch from Knuckleheads leaving at 9:00AM for Kate's Kitchen at 80th and North Oak. Kate's has been great about seating our group promptly upon arrival, serving us quickly and presenting us with a selection of great items from their menu.

The route is about 12.5 miles to Kate's while the return to Knuckleheads is approximately 21 miles of mostly downhill and flat, a good half of which is on a beautiful trail.  I have modified the return to cross the Fairfax and Lewis & Clark bridges instead of the Heart of America.  It's about the same mileage with probably better car traffic flow - let me know what you think.

There could be a refueling stop at a micro-bewery in the River Market (Strange Days) or West Bottoms (Stockyards) before working our way back to Knuckleheads and their no-cover blues jam.

THURSDAY, February 20, STILL WINTER - NO RIDE

This winter really doesn't like Thursdays.  I have been getting some riding in this month, more than Feb 2019, but still less than 200 miles for the month.  Things look good Friday and Saturday so I hope you find time to ride then.  The extended forecast for the following Thursday, Feb 27, looks cold again.  I hope that changes.

See you sometime soon I hope.

THURSDAY, February 13th - STILL NO GOOD FOR RIDING!

This bad weather keeps cycling (no pun intended) through on Thursdays.  Too cold this time:

I hope you were able to get out earlier this week when it was rideable.  The forecast for next Thursday, Feb 20th shows a high of 45°, mostly sunny and 8 mph winds from the SSW.  That should work - perhaps a 9 or 10 am start.  Stay tuned and get out there when you can.

Sunday, February 2, 2020

THURSDAY, February 6th - Still No Ride

I'm getting pretty tired of this weather.  I'm calling off the ride for Thursday again.  Besides the weather forecast not being great I am accompanying Kathy to Orlando as her tennis team competes in their national tournament.  Perhaps I'll get a little riding in there, who knows?

I have been a little lax about making cancellation announcements the past 2 weeks but the conditions were fairly obvious that group riding wasn't happening.  Superbowl weekend (Saturday - Monday) looks like pretty good riding; I hope you are able to get out these days.

One more thing - I missed wishing you all Happy Chinese New Year, the year of the rat:

Wednesday, January 15, 2020

THURSDAY, January 16 - Too Cold

Winter is back.  Let's hope for better weather next week.

Wednesday, January 8, 2020

THURSDAY, January 9 - Embassy Suites Show-And-Go - 9:00 AM Start

The weather forecast for Thursday shows unseasonable temperatures, 50s, but moderate chances of rain and high winds.

I think it is worth the chance to ride starting at 9 and probably heading south using the trail to block the wind, returning with the wind at our back.  This suggests something like Riverside as our destination but let's make that call when we meet.  Feel free to consider and suggest alternatives.

Wednesday, January 1, 2020

THURSDAY, January 2, 2020 - Embassy Suites to TBA - 9:00AM Start

Happy New Year

I'm looking forward to more great riding with friends in the new year.  I do plan to go the first Thursday of 2020 leaving Embassy Suites at 9:00AM.  I will update this post later today - perhaps quite late BUT I will see you at 9 at Embassy Suites for the 1st of my Thursday rides this New Year!

UPDATE
I thought we'd start 2020 riding with a trip to Dearborn (breakfast at the Dearborn Cafe). This is approximately 20 miles each way.  This pushes my self-imposed limit but the terrain is gentle and the wind and weather seem well suited for this ride.  Starting at 9 we might miss the breakfast menu (or not).

Below is an old map.  As much as I try to avoid up-and-back rides that is probably what I will do.

By the way, sadly:

There was a good turnout for the Memorial Ride for Pablo Sanders, Jr. Wednesday evening.
